We have chosen routes on roads and paths that are suitable for road bikes. A road bike will make the trip much easier, particularly when going up some of the longer ascents. If you do not have a racing bike, a light touring bike or CX / graval bike is fine. The most important thing is that whatever bike you bring along, you should feel comfortable using it and be able to carry out basic maintenance on it. We strongly recommend having ridden it on training rides before your trip.
Shipping your bike
It is important you do a good job packing your bike. You do not want to arrive the day before the trip and find your bike is damaged. Unfortunately luggage handlers are not always very kind to bike boxes. Here is a nice video tutorial:
Equipment Suggestions
We strongly suggest that you bring a Garmin navigator with the routes (that we will send you) pre-loaded prior to arriving for the start of your Scatto tour.
A small extra carrying case is very useful to bring a wallet, camera, energy bars etc. You will be spending many hours on your bike !!
Use wider tires....25 or 28 mm!! They are more comfortable.
Use a comfortable saddle and a relatively higher handlebar. We are NOT going to the races. This is a long ride and you will need the comfort...in fact at the end of the day it will make you FASTER.
Do not bring new equipment for the tour. Bring only tried and tested material....you do not want to find out mid-way through the tour that your new saddle just does not fit you!!!
PLEASE have your bike thoroughly checked by a professional mechanic before you leave....the last thing we what, is that you cannot complete the tour due to a stupid mechanical problem.
Cannot/do not want to bring your bike?
We strongly suggest that you bring your bike since you have certainly fine tined your position and your body is used to your bike.
We can however organise the rental of high end road bikes for a fee of about € 50 / day. Contact us for more details.
If for logistical reasons you cannot arrive for the tour with your bike consider shipping it before hand to our offices. A company called Ship Bikes could be your solution.
